Trial (not Trail) Riding is a specialized form of off-road motorcycling very popular in Japan. The idea is to negotiate mountain trails like a mountain goat, without losing control by spinning tires, tearing up trails or attaining great speeds. Slowly and in a sure-footed way, the Trial Rider climbs over rocks and up steep inclines by playing a chess-game of moves, working with the natural environment instead of trying to overpower it.

In the early morning, the Explorasport Adventure Team assembles for a photo before taking off on a "Tread Lightly" expedition through the mountains of the Dragon Mountains near Kyoto, Japan.

Following the trail through the Japanese bamboo forest. The December snow made an interesting addition to the already slippery trails.

There were many rests along the way.. here it is easy to see the special seats and low-slung (low centre of gravity) of the specialized trial riding bikes.

Another beautiful view from high in the Dragon Mountains. The Explorasport Adventre Team rests after climbing to this point up a slippery mountain stream bed.

Preparing for the night. Two team members get the tents ready for a much needed sleep.

Tents are set up, time to remember the day's activities, make dinner and relax.
